ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Solace. Serenity. Comfort. These are feelings I hope to inspire in each person who views my paintings. I want the vivid colors to excite and captivate, yet have the images be strangely soothing at the same time.

I’d love for the viewer to tap into the incredible excitement of being alive and able to create every day. Possibly to motivate others in whatever medium or capacity that calls to them, and share with all the joy and abundance of our lives on earth.

In each painting, I strive to reveal universal truths. Not only to celebrate nature in all its shapes and disguises, but also to give ‘voice’ to the rising consciousness of our age.

Victoria Landis, born and raised in a small New Jersey town, had her first urge to truly draw at age 12. She’s been drawing and painting ever since.

Numerous moves around the country, including twelve years living on Oahu, have greatly influenced Victoria’s work. Stints as an interior designer, a kitchen and bath designer, and a stay-at-home mom to her three sons, have pushed aside her art in the past.

After divorce, with her fiftieth birthday looming in October of 2007, Victoria decided to go for it. To do what she always really wanted to do—paint and write. Now, she is grateful for the courage to do so and the wonderful opportunities that continue to come her way, creating canvasses and murals that bring joy to people.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my digital photomontages, I explore the convergence of two geographies: the landscape of the imagination and that of physical places. Inspired by the natural world, I heighten the impact of the rhythms and patterns of nature by overlaying and blending my original photographs. This technique imbues my work with a mystery and depth that gives it a metaphysical dimension.

Lee Muslin has been a fine art photographer for over 30 years and in 1995 began exploring the possibilities of digital imaging. Originally she studied studio fine arts, but gravitated towards and stayed with photography throughout the years. Digital imaging has brought her back to her fine arts roots with the creation of images in the computer. These photomontages evolve as she layers, blends and combines her original photographs.

Ms. Muslin has participated in many exhibitions in New York as well as several other states and countries. She had 2 solo exhibitions in 2005 at Franklin 54 Gallery and the Ansonia Window Show, both in New York City. In 2004, she had two solo exhibitions at Mercer Management Consulting and Manhattan Theatre Resource also in New York City. Some of her group show venues include the Museum of Modern Art, Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, Soho Photo Gallery, Printmaking Council of New Jersey and the Salmagundi Club. Ms. Muslin had three of her digital images exhibited at the Bergen Museum in Diving into Digital in the Spring of 2006. Another digital image was selected to be part of a surrealism show, Brave Destiny, at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center. Other digital images have been accepted into Inspired by the Land at the Attleboro Museum in Massachusetts and the Beecher Center for technology in the arts at the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio in 2003 where she won a third prize award. A traveling exhibition, Toxic Landscapes, which included a work by Ms. Muslin, began it’s tour in association with the WASTE (Women Assess the State of the Environment) Conference organized by the Rachel Carson Institute at Chatham College and the Women’s Environment and Development Organization. It continued on to venues in New Jersey and Cuba. Other traveling exhibitions which included her work were Snapshots organized by The Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, Reactions originated by Exit Art and the September 11 Photo Project. The September 11 Photo Project has become part of the permanent collection of the New York Public Library and Reactions is now in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. as part of Witness & Response. In June of 2000, a digital image created by Ms. Muslin was selected by Ms. Maria Christina Villasenor, an assistant curator of film and media at the Guggenheim Museum, for an exhibition at the Phoenix Gallery. For an exhibit at the Long Beach Island Foundation Of The Arts And Sciences in July 2003, another digital image was selected by Mr. Edward Earle, curator of digital media at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

As one of ten finalists in Gallery Print’s 2002 Botanical Photography Awards, Ms. Muslin exhibited at the La Quinta Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM. She won Second Prize in the Professional Women Photographers' Cow Quest Contest where the panel of jurors included Jodi Kwan, Deputy Photo Editor of the New York Times Magazine and Michele McNally, Picture Editor for Fortune Magazine. The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit gave Ms. Muslin five awards over 3 years including first prize for photography. She also won first prize for photography at the Corn Hill Arts Festival in Rochester, NY. From the Museum of Computer Art she won third prize in the Enhanced Photography category in 2001. Her work has been published in Ink Pot, a literary journal, Artistry Magazine, Creative Insights, the September 11 Photo Project book, and Manhattan Arts International in addition to 14 other publications.

In 2000, Ms. Muslin was accepted into the National Association of Women Artists, Inc., an organization started by prominent women artists in the late 1800’s, and she served on their jury panel for selection of new members in printmaking, photography and computer arts for 5 years.
